MALTA -- A Glens Falls man has been charged after leading State Police on a chase throughout Saratoga County before crashing and overturning his vehicle.
The 47-year-old from Glens Falls has been charged with three counts of third-degree unlawful fleeing of a police officer in a motor vehicle, second-degree obstructing governmental administration, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, driving while ability impaired by drugs, all misdemeanors, as well as numerous other vehicle and traffic law violations, according to State Police.
The chase started after State Police tried to stop the man's vehicle on I-87 in Malta on Monday for a vehicle and traffic law violation. When the driver did not pull over, troopers pursued him, according to State Police. The chase was cut off near Ushers Road in Clifton Park for safety reasons because the driver was allegedly driving recklessly, State Police said.
Police later found the driver stopped at a red light at the intersection of state Route 9 and Fire Road in Halfmoon. When troopers tried to approach his vehicle, he fled again, police said. State Police pursued the driver across multiple roadways until they again called off the chase because of safety concerns on state Route 146 in Mechanicville.
Immediately after troopers stopped pursuing the driver, he crashed and overturned his vehicle on state Route 4, according to State Police. The driver didn't collide with any other vehicles.
The driver, who was uninjured, was taken into custody and allegedly found in possession of a controlled substance. He refused to provide a sample for a drug test, according to State Police.
The driver was arraigned in Halfmoon Town Court and released.
