Cardinals return three minor league managers, promote three for 2025 MiLB season

Following a winning season that ended in a Florida State League title with Class Low-A Palm Beach in 2024, manager Gary Kendall will return for his fourth consecutive season at the helm for the PB-Cards.

Kendall will be one of three returning minor league managers in the Cardinals' farm system as the system goes through a minor league overhaul with Rob Cerfolio as the club's new assistant general manager overseeing player development and performance and Larry Day as its farm director.

Along with Kendall's return, Ben Johnson is set to manage Memphis for his seventh season, and Fray Peniche is set to manage his 15th season in the Dominican Summer League, it was announced on Friday.

Patrick Anderson, who managed Class High-A Peoria each of the last three seasons, is slated to fill the managerial opening for Class AA Springfield after Jose Leger was promoted to assistant field and base running coordinator following four seasons as Springfield's manager.

In December, Leger was one of four coordinators named to the Cardinals minor league field staff for 2025, which will have Ryan Barba as its field coordinator. Before Barba's hiring, the Cardinals had not had a field coordinator at the minor league level since at least 2020.

Roberto Espinoza, who managed the Cardinals' Florida Complex League affiliate the last four seasons, was announced as Anderson's successor as Peoria's manager.

Willi Martin, a hitting coach for Palm Beach in 2023 and 2024, will fill the opening left by Espinoza.

Pitching coach Darwin Marrero and hitting coach Howie Clark are also slated to return to Memphis's staff alongside Johnson.

Peter Mooney joins Memphis's staff as a bench coach after working as a roving infield instructor within the New York Mets' system in 2024. Mooney was one of three coaches new to the Cardinals' named to a bench coach role for a Cardinals minor league affiliate.

Each of the Cardinals' six minor league affiliates from Class AAA to the Dominican Summer League had a fourth coach in previous seasons but that coach did not hold the title of bench coach.

As of Friday, Palm Beach did not have a bench coach named.

The announced minor league coaching staff and player development assignments come a day before the Cardinals Winter Warm-up weekend, where Cerfolio is set to debut in front of Cardinals fans for a panel alongside general managers Moises Rodriguez and Randy Flores on Sunday inside Ballpark Village.

Here are the coaching staffs at each level:
