Patriots release former second-round draft pick Tyquan Thornton

The New England Patriots and wide receiver Tyquan Thornton are parting ways. As first reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN, the team is set to waive the former second-round draft pick on Saturday.

Parting ways with Thornton will open a spot on the Patriots' 53-man roster. The team recently designated cornerback Alex Austin and defensive tackle Christian Barmore to return from injured reserve and the non-football injury list, respectively.

Thornton, 24, joined the Patriots as the 50th overall selection in the 2022 NFL Draft. The team actually traded up four spots to bring the speedy Baylor product on board. Needless to say, the investment did not work out as intended.

In two-and-a-half seasons as a Patriot, Thornton appeared in 28 games, catching 39 passes for 385 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also carried the ball six times for 67 yards and another score. In 2024, he caught four passes for 47 yards in six games.
