PARADISE, Calif. -- On Wednesday, the Town of Paradise was hit by a substantial downpour, leading to concerns about flooding in the area. In response to the heavy rainfall, local officials have assisted residents by providing free sandbags to help protect homes and properties.
The National Weather Service has issued a warning for significant rainfall expected to persist throughout the week in Paradise, lasting until Friday. Residents should prepare for gusty winds, which could potentially reach speeds of 33 miles per hour.
In response to the anticipated weather conditions, the town of Paradise has established two convenient locations for residents to pick up sandbags. Sandbags will be available at the Building Resiliency Center and Paradise Town Hall, both located along Skyway. Sand is available for shoveling on Sierra Park Drive.
Paradise Public Works states that these services are always available to residents and encourages them to be prepared.
"Storms in Paradise are a little bit different, especially post-2018 Camp Fire. We see a lot more run off and decreased vegetation, so it's really important for property owners to be aware of the drainage systems on their private property and use sandbags and other measures to help direct the water away from structures," said Marc Mattox, Director of Public Works in Paradise.
Residents are limited to ten sandbags. However, the town will try to accommodate those who may need more.
Officials are strongly encouraging residents to exercise caution while driving, as numerous roads in Paradise are undergoing maintenance. This work has resulted in uneven surfaces, construction zones, and a lack of adequate lighting on many streets.
Paradise Public Works is also prepared to provide mutual aid to nearby cities affected by the Park Fire.
