Watch Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, Lucy Liu, and J.K. Simmons face off in a 'Red One' ugly sweater competition

Watch Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, Lucy Liu, and J.K. Simmons face off in a 'Red One' ugly sweater competition

The actors from Jake Kasdan's new Christmas action-adventure movie faced off in a fiercely competitive ugly-sweater-making contest in a new video for EW (see above).

Dwayne Johnson and J.K. Simmons paired up to craft a red maroon sweater, while Chris Evans and Kristofer Hivju joined forces to create their own gray sweater, and Lucy Liu, Bonnie Hunt, and Kiernan Shipka worked together on a white sweater. "This is exactly what it feels like to be on Project Runway," Hunt joked. "Someone call Heidi Klum," Shipka added.

Johnson began with some polite trash talk against the Captain America actor. "I feel great about competing against Chris," he said. "And I think we're doing pretty good. I think of all the sweaters, I think this is the sweater that's gonna reflect not only our movie Red One but gonna reflect something that we have that these guys don't have, which is -- "

The cast also took turns revealing what childhood toy they'd want to magically transform into a life-size living version of itself using technology from the film. "What I would like to make bigger from my childhood is my Princess Leia action figure -- if I was a kid, not now," Johnson said.

"Okay, good, good. PG version, yeah," Simmons joked, adding that he'd summon "Bob the Builder, somebody who can actually do things with their hands, I think, and has some craft creativity" to help him with the sweater-making process.

Meanwhile, Hivju said he'd want a real-life He-Man action figure, and Evans added, "I would've taken Battle Cat, He-Man's tiger, the green tiger he drove -- drove?" Laughing at his word choice, he continued, "The tiger he'd drive around town, around Castle Grayskull."

Later, Hunt wished for a life-size G.I. Joe. "You know, I'm single," she joked. "Or Bob the Builder, he would do us well."

As the clock expired, Johnson and Simmons ended their crafting journey on a lackluster note. "You going for symmetry?" the Whiplash star asked. "I dunno what the f--- I'm doing," Johnson responded.

The duo held up their creation for judging, showing off a seemingly random smattering of assorted decorations. Nobody offered any favorable words on the result. "Not everyone's good at everything," Evans joked. "We all have different talents, and maybe you guys should stay out of the fashion lane."

Next, Evans and Hivju displayed their sweater, which featured a sideways depiction of Santa Claus' face and hat. "I think it's cheeky, I think it's adorable," Shipka opined. "I wanna see a hat on a sweater! That's nice."

"It's Christmas but shocking," Evans said of his handiwork.

Liu, Hunt, and Shipka wowed their castmates with their final product, which featured artfully arranged pine branches, ribbons, and jingle bells. "Relentlessly, boundlessly talented," Johnson said. "I mean, that's ridiculous; that's how good it is."

Simmons added, "It makes me even more embarrassed by what we did not accomplish over here... Clearly, women are a lot better at this than at least we are."

Shipka celebrated her team's apparent victory. "The future is female, everybody," she said. "Can I wear that to the New York premiere?"

Red One stars Johnson as North Pole security agent Callum Drift, Evans as bounty hunter Jack O'Malley, Liu as North Pole director Zoe, Simmons as Santa Claus, Hunt as Mrs. Claus, Hivju as Krampus, and Shipka as the witch Grýla.

Red One is in theaters and streaming on Prime Video now. Watch the cast compete in the video above.
