HAVERHILL -- Whittier Tech students were kept out of the classroom Friday - the second day in a row - after a smoky blaze nearby kept firefighters busy.
Smoke from a smoldering stump pile fire at Kimball Farm forced the cancellation of classes Friday for Whittier Tech's more than 1,200 students. The Haverhill Fire Department originally responded to a fire at Kimball Farm Wednesday night.
Crews worked continuously to control the blaze, but its smoke traveled throughout the city, forcing Whittier to dismiss Thursday's classes early after students and staff reported feeling ill due to the smoky air. Haverhill's Rescue 1 arrived at the high school to monitor the building and identify fire risks.
The smoldering nature of the fire kept the department busy, but the incident is under control, according to Kimball Farm. Haverhill's firefighters needed assistance from neighboring fire departments.
"Everyone is safe and we can't thank the Haverhill Fire Department and the surrounding departments that came out to assist enough," Kimball Farm said in an announcement via Facebook.
Unlike Whittier, Kimball Farm's operations have continued as regularly scheduled. As the burn occurred far from the publicly accessible area, smoke in the air won't interrupted weekend plans. On a separate parcel of land, Kimball opens its corn maze and hosts the Vintage Bazaar New England event.
