A middle of the week surprise that wasn't much of a surprise was a welcome respite for Kansas fans that are tired of watching fourth quarter collapses from the gridiron Jayhawks. Yes, basketball season is almost upon us and the Kansas Jayhawks treated the fans to a preseason gift that many us of had been waiting for for quite a while.
Yes, the classic Kansas circus font is back as the primary word mark for the basketball program. It's about time. But before we disparage Trajan font and the direction the university took back in 2007, we have to remember that KU won two national titles wearing the sometimes maligned word mark.
But now circus is back so let's dig into the details.
For starters, I'm a partisan here, but man are these a thing of beauty. Not many KU fans are going to disagree.
Kansas is displayed prominently across the chest as it should be and it's perfection. Blue outlined in red for the home jersey and white outlined in red for the away blues although those have only popped up on online stores. We'll focus on the whites.
The neck and arm loop piping is blue with a thin strip of white separating the thin red stripe. I like it. The Adidas logo is too prominent and large, but makers marks are heading in that direction so I feel there's nothing that could've been done about that.
The waistband is one we've seen a lot in recent years, a simple blue/white/red/white/blue combo. It's tough to beat and is a classic KU look. There is a Jayhawk on the side of each legs of the shorts as well, but the smallest details are at the bottom of the shorts.
The official wording is that the plaid inside the thicker blue stripe is reminiscent of classic plaid worn by the inventor of basketball and Kansas coaching legend James Naismith. Ok, I guess I'll buy that. It looks good and from afar will look just like a thick blue stripe. The colors from the belt are switched with the red outlining the blue. Overall, a sharp look.
My one complaint is the numbers. I think they would look slightly better without the very thin white area between the blue number and the red outline. A minor complaint, but conformity in a uniform is important. The back numbers appear to be the same. The name plate appears to also be in circus font and completely blue to make it as visible and readable as possible, a huge plus.
That small discrepancy aside, these uniforms are almost perfect. They never should've gone away from the circus font, but at least Kansas athletics came back with an absolute winner of a uniform.
