Vape explosion leaves Bakersfield teen with amputated fingers and burns, family speaks out

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) -- Aiden Adams, a 15-year-old from Bakersfield, never imagined the health hazards of vaping could lead to severe physical injuries until a vape exploded in his hand.

"I put it down by my lower abdomen and that's when it exploded," Adams said. "I started running and I looked down and saw my hand and said, 'Oh my God.'"

In a TV exclusive interview, Aiden and his father, Robert Adams, recounted the harrowing incident. Robert said, "He told us he was going to go out on a walk. And I said alright. We know the potential for him vaping is there, not lost on us. It's been a thing we fought with him for years, it's an addiction."

Instead of a solo walk, Aiden went with friends to an overpass in town to hang out and vape. He described how his friends usually share and trade vapes, and it was one of these devices that severely injured him. As he was smoking, he put the vape down from his face, and it exploded in his hand.

Robert Adams detailed the extent of his son's injuries, saying, "His middle and index finger, the tips of those were amputated during the explosion. They were amputated further during surgery because of the damage. The middle finger has healed over and is doing really good. The index finger is still exposed."

Aiden also suffered second and third-degree burns to his chest and face, with some of his hair burned off. The holes in his shirt illustrate the extent of the damage caused by the vape.

Robert expressed disbelief at the severity of the injuries, saying, "To actually see that amount of damage, it's not...I wouldn't see that thing sitting on the counter and think that could take a hand off."

The FDA states that fire and explosions from vapes are uncommon and that the exact causes of such malfunctions are unknown. However, their website advises that until all vapes conform to safety standards, the best protection is knowing the device and how to handle its battery.

Robert emphasized that more regulations need to be placed not only on the contents of what's being smoked from the vapes but also on what the device itself is being manufactured with.
