CANDLER COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) - A man was killed in a hit and run in Candler County last month, and now a witness to the horrific crash is speaking out in an effort to find the driver who fled the scene.

"A guy came through and just nailed him, hit him. It was like the worst thing ever. It was horrific. I can't even put it into words what it was like."

Some simple car troubles turned deadly on Interstate 16 on the evening of Oct. 26, according to Jarriel.

"I see these old people broke down on the side of the road. I was like, I'll pull in there and help them. I got there and the tire was off the rim. I was trying to help them get it back on," he said.

He said that's when it happened, "Once he hit him, hit the guy, he stopped like 400 yards from us, and he pulled over. He was checking his vehicle out. I thought the guy was going to do the right thing, but that's not what happened."

Jarriel said the driver sped away. He followed the driver all the way to 116.

The entire incident happened within a span of minutes.

"Five minutes into it the old lady, she was just like let's just leave it," Jarriel said. "I said no ma'am give me five more minutes; I'll have y'all going. It's been messing with me a little bit just because I asked them to stay. I mean I feel like I hadn't told them to turn around or hold up give me five more minutes, they'd have been gone. But when it's your time, it's your time."

In the aftermath, Jarriel has been trying to help police find the suspect.

"I put a thousand dollar reward out on him," he said. "I got $1000. I have two more buddies that are putting in $500 more. That's $2000. So, I hope we find him."

The Georgia Department of Public Safety released a photo of a white truck earlier this month. They said it was seen traveling near the site of the crash just minutes after it happened.

Police are still searching for the truck they suspect to be involved and the person who was driving.
