WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The 911 calls made on the night a Novant Airlink helicopter crashed have been released. At least three calls were made moments after the chopper went down in a wooded area off Holly Shelter Rd.
One of the callers indicated they knew the pilot and had been in touch with him by phone. According to the caller, the pilot said he needed to get to the hospital as soon as possible.
Here is some of that 911 call:
"He's an EMT pilot. He crashed and he's having a hard time -- people finding him (inaudible) oh my God."
"There is fire. I don't know if it is from him or they're burning."
"And he has the EMT crew with him but I don't know how many."
"He says he needs to go to the hospital he says. He needs to go to the hospital right now."
The helicopter went down on Feb. 24 near the New Hanover and Pender County line. There were three crew members on board at the time of the crash. All three survived.
The National Transportation Safety Board hasn't released the preliminary report on what caused the crash but it is expected within 30 days.
