Tips to prevent those with dementia from wandering in winter weather

LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) - The Alzheimer's Foundation of America recently released a list of five steps caregivers of those with dementia can follow to prevent their loved ones from wandering in winter weather.

While it's common for individuals with dementia to wander, these behaviors can be a risk to their well-being. These risks are increased when winter weather is present. Between freezing temperatures and slick ice, it's simply not safe for individuals with dementia to be outdoors unattended in these conditions.

"Wandering or getting lost can affect anyone living with dementia, and the dangers are magnified right now in cold, winter weather areas. It's essential for family caregivers to know the risk factors and warning signs that can lead to wandering, address them, and create an emergency response plan," said Jennifer Reeder, LCSW, AFA's Director of Educational and Social Services. "Taking action now will help families keep their loved ones living with dementia safe during the winter and throughout the year."

Here are five steps that those who are caregivers can take to protect the ones they love:
