Rep. Mike Walz (R-FL) expressed his confidence in the Department of Government Efficiency to keep the U.S. from falling "off the financial cliff."
In the weeks since President-elect Donald Trump won the Oval Office, he's named Tesla CEO Elon Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy to be the volunteer heads of DOGE. While they aren't government officials, it is their job to create "a lean team of small-government crusaders" to work closely with the White House Office of Management and Budget. Waltz fielded a question about the new department on One Nation with Brian Kilmeade Saturday.

"You've been in Congress too, when business people get very frustrated when they try to fix Congress. Can you see a way forward to cut a trillion or two out of our budget? Is that practical?" host Brian Kilmeade asked.

"I do think it's practical, Brian. You're talking about people that have transformed whole industries: space, automobile, energy, right? Even investments into healthcare," Waltz said, referring to Musk and Ramaswamy. "So, we do need that mindset and I do think there is massive amounts that can and should and have to be cut. The balance sheet just isn't sustainable anymore. So it's really not an option and we shouldn't wait until we go off the financial cliff to start taking meaningful action."
Ramaswamy claimed he expected "certain agencies to be deleted outright" under Trump's administration, which lead many to speculate he was referring to the Department of Education. Ramaswamy called to abolish the department as recently as last summer while running his own campaign for president.

Musk is notorious for his mass layoffs upon purchasing Twitter, which is now known as X. The platform whittled its staff to fewer than 2,000 following multiple rounds of lay offs and mass resignation. More than half of the employees that were at the tech company before Musk purchased it are no longer there in the name of cutting costs and boosting profit.
Trump named Waltz his national security advisor in the days since winning the election, which prompted the Florida congressman to resign, leaving his seat open in the House.
