MARION, N.C. (WBTV) - A North Carolina woman is facing a manslaughter charge in connection to a child's death earlier this year.
The McDowell County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to a call involving a child in cardiac arrest on Resistoflex Road on Jan. 13. When deputies arrived, paramedics had already pronounced the child dead.
The sheriff's office said in a Nov. 22 news release that an autopsy revealed the child died of asphyxiation, which is when the body does not get enough oxygen.
Deputies said their investigation determined that negligence created unsafe sleeping conditions and contributed to the child's death.
As a result of the investigation, 23-year-old Katherine Grace Purdom was charged with felony involuntary manslaughter.
Purdom's bond was set at $50,000.
