Konnan's health has always been a topic of discussion among many fans, as he had been dealing with kidney issues last year. It was then revealed that he was hospitalized for a long time due to diverticulitis, and now Konnan has shared details about his recent health crisis.
According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Konnan had been hospitalized for over 26 days due to diverticulitis and other health complications, and no further details were given about his health status.
While speaking on his K100 podcast, Konnan finally talked about his recent health episode. Konnan noted that about a month ago, he went to Miami for promotional work with Triple A on Univision, which is the biggest Latino network in the U.S. While he was there, he had trouble going to the bathroom for three days. When he got home, he asked his wife for something for constipation because he'd never experienced it before. She gave him prune juice, and he ended up having a lot of stomach issues, but still couldn't urinate. Soon, he started shaking and feeling worse, so he was taken to the hospital. There, doctors diagnosed him with diverticulitis, which is an infection caused by bacteria in the stomach. The bacteria had spread to his brain, causing swelling.
While in the ambulance, Konnan fell and hit his head, getting a big bump and injuring his leg. His condition worsened, and he suffered cognitive damage. He couldn't talk, couldn't open his eyes, and couldn't remember anything. For about 15 days, he was in ICU, unable to understand where he was or even remember simple things. He was hallucinating as well.
"Well, about a month ago, I went to Miami to do promotional work for Triple A for Univision, which is the largest Latino network in the United States. While I was there, I couldn't go to the bathroom, number one or two, for three days. Then, when I got home, I told my wife, 'Can you get me something for constipation? I've never had constipation before.' She gave me prune juice, bro, and I was just blowing up all over the place, but I still couldn't urinate. Then I started to shake and I started to get in bad shape, so they took me to the hospital and they said I had diverticulitis -- another bacteria formed in my stomach and it hit my brain, causing my brain to swell. They had to... and not to mention that when I was in the ambulance, I fell and got a humongous lump on my head and ripped up my leg.
Yeah, so I was all messed up, and then I had cognitive damage because for like three weeks, I was in ICU. I didn't put two and two together -- I didn't know what ICU was, but it was intensive care, right? But I didn't put two and two together, so for like, I'd say, 15 days, I couldn't speak, couldn't open my eyes, you know, I had cognitive damage, I would forget everything. If you told me something now, five minutes later, I'd forgotten it, all because of the bacteria from the diverticulitis."
Konnan noted that he had an MRI done, which was very uncomfortable, but luckily there was no brain damage from wrestling or the bump he took. Still, he was worried about his brain since he couldn't remember anything. After the MRI, doctors said he needed to go to a rehab center for a few days before he could go home.
When he arrived at the rehab center, it felt very depressing, like a retirement home. He had three roommates, one of whom sounded like he was dying, another had the TV on too loud, and the last one snored loudly. Konnan was uncomfortable, and his wife, Stacy, wanted to take him out of there, but the doctors said he had to stay for a little longer. Unfortunately, while he was there, they gave him a medication that made his condition worse. He started trembling uncontrollably, and Stacy got very concerned. When she checked the medication, she found it wasn't right for him, so they rushed him to another hospital.
"They did an MRI on me recently. Dude, they stuff you in this tube like you're the inside of a sausage. Yeah, okay, you're in there for like 30 minutes, and all you hear -- and I'm not kidding -- it's really, really loud. It sounded like I was in Lebanon or something. It's brutal. So I was there for 30 minutes, and I was thinking, 'They're probably going to see some brain damage from wrestling or the bump I took.' Thank God, my brain was okay. But I was really like, 'I just thought, man, this is the only thing I have left -- is my brain messed up?' Because I couldn't talk, I couldn't remember anything, and on top of that, I was hallucinating. So they took me from there. They were like, 'Well, you know, I wanted to go home. That's the only thing I wanted to do was go home.' And they said, 'Well, you have to go to this rehab center and just be there a couple days and then you can go home.'
I mean, I couldn't even talk right when I got there, bro. It looked like an... because even Oscar (Rey Mysterio) commented, 'Listen to it, the doctor says don't be stubborn.' So I got there. Now, have you ever been to a retirement home?
Okay, very depressing, right? Everything's old, including the people in it. I felt like a teenager there, bro. I got there and I had three roommates. One guy was making sounds like he was dying, the other guy had the TV on as loud as he could, it was really ridiculous. A lot of noise, not comfortable, right? Another guy was snoring, and so I told Stacy, 'Please get me out of here, this place isn't for me.' She said, 'Just listen to the doctor, it'll be one or two days.'
While I was there, they gave me a medication that they should not have given me, and so it got worse to the point that I was trembling really bad, really bad, really bad. And then they were like... you know, Stacy freaked out. She said, 'What did you give him?' They showed her the list of medicines and she said, 'He doesn't take this anymore.' So, now they had to take me to another hospital, emergency, and when we got to that hospital, they rushed me to ICU and immediately did what they do."
At the new hospital, they immediately took Konnan to the ICU, where doctors worked hard to save his life. His condition was very serious, and there were many times he felt close to losing his life or having permanent brain damage. During this time, he couldn't eat on his own and had to be fed like a baby. The antibiotics he was given also had side effects, including causing him to lose control of his bowels, and staff had to clean him up. Konnan describes feeling extremely humiliated by the situation, but he's grateful to have made it through.
"Bro, they were trying to save my life because I was in dire straits, either having permanent brain damage or losing my life. And I'm not being overdramatic when I tell you that. There were a lot of times where I felt not humiliated, but I'll give you an example, bro. I couldn't eat because I was shaking too much and I couldn't put the food in my mouth. So they cut the food and fed me like a baby, bro. They had to sponge bathe me, and this is the worst part. The antibiotics they were giving me -- one of the side effects was that you s*** a lot, which they call a bowel movement. So, they'd come in and ask, 'Did you have a bowel movement?' which is a nice way of saying, 'You just s*** on yourself.'"
This was certainly a harrowing experience for Konnan and fans are simply glad that he is healthier than before and managed to get out of the hospital. While Konnan isn't fully out of the woods yet, Konnan still has more resting to do but he is stronger than before and that's all he could ask for.
