Roommate dispute leads to assault, $4K of property damages

(KRON) - An alleged intoxicated man was arrested after assaulting his roommate and damaging their property, according to the San Mateo Police Department.

The incident occurred around 3:31 p.m. on Friday in the 100 block of 36 Avenue. Police dispatch was told a man, who was under the influence, was destroying objects inside an apartment. The man was identified as 38-year-old San Mateo resident Marvin Davila Ramos.

The victim, also Ramos' roommate, informed the responding officers that Ramos huddled slurs at him, damaged property and slapped him in the face, according to SMPD.

Police said they witnessed Ramos breaking the windows of the apartment complex and throwing a TV and fish tank out of the window.

Officers learned that another person barricaded herself in a bedroom to avoid the violence.

Officers attempted to negotiate with Ramos to get him to surrender, however, he did not comply. To subdue Ramos, police used a 40mm projectile, which according to police is a less-lethal-weapon. SMPD said Ramos still was resisting arrest after being subdued.

Ramos was taken to the hospital and then once cleared from medical evaluation, Ramos was taken to the San Mateo County Jail. He was charged with suspicion of felony vandalism, obstructing a police officer, violating civil rights and battery.

According to San Mateo PD, Ramos caused more than $4,000 worth of damage, including an estimated $3,890 in damages to the apartment complex and $500 in damage within the apartment.
