MIAMI -- The Philadelphia 76ers are in South Florida as they prepare for a contest with the Miami Heat on Monday night. The Sixers are 2-10 following a loss to the Orlando Magic to open the road trip and are looking to find their way.
Joel Embiid is set to play in his third game of the season on Monday and one has to wonder about his minutes restriction. The big fella played 33 minutes against the Magic on Friday after playing 26 in his season debut on Nov. 12 against the New York Knicks.
As the Sixers prepare to face the Heat, coach Nick Nurse gave an update on Embiid's minutes as he and the team progress forward.
"I think we knew we had a couple days here to see in between games," Nurse said of pushing Embiid a bit in Orlando. "So pushing it up was pretty good. I do have to check to see exactly where we're at. He was a full participant in practice today. So that's a good sign. We got another day here-ish to see how it responds, but I would assume we're in that ballpark. Maybe, a smidge more, but we'll see. More or less."
The Heat present a tough matchup despite their up-and-down start to the season. Coach Erik Spoelstra always finds schemes to slow down his opponents and Heat big man Bam Adebayo is a tough matchup for anybody let alone somebody like Embiid who is working his way back.
"He obviously is one of their big focal points, but they got a lot of -- Jimmy (Butler) controls a lot of the offense," Nurse said of the Heat. "They run a lot of stuff with their shooters as well. I mean, Bam, what you want to make sure and do is make sure he's getting challenged shots and working, I mean if he has freedom to play, like he has free jump shots he's gonna make them, right? We got to make sure that there's some crowded, you know, and we got to make him work. Not let him play in space that much, right?"
The Sixers and the Heat will tip off at 7:30 p.m. EST on Monday.
