Nov. 20 -- GRAND FORKS -- Crews from the Grand Forks Fire Department responded to a report of smoke in multiple apartments.
The call came shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, prompting crews to be dispatched to 515 N. Eighth St. When they arrived, they found smoke in units on the first and second floors of the building, with half of the eight units affected, according to a GFFD press release. Further investigation revealed that a fire had occurred in the ceiling of a first-floor apartment.
The GFFD release said it is believed to have self-extinguished, thanks to a broken water line. All occupants of the affected apartments were evacuated upon the fire department's arrival.
According to the GFFD, damage was contained to the two main-floor units. Residents of two units could not return due to damage. The American Red Cross has arranged temporary housing for those affected.
