STANLEY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A person is dead after being shot by police in North Carolina, officials say.
Around 12:22 p.m. Saturday, officers from the Gaston County Police Department responded to a 911 call in the 2000 block of Beau Dr. in Stanley.
During the response, officials say an 'encounter' occurred between the officers and an individual on scene. An officer discharged their firearm, striking the individual. Medical aid was provided but the person died at the scene.
Police did not give details on what led up to the shooting or why the officer fired their weapon.
The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave per department protocol while the incident is under investigation. The NC State Bureau of Investigation was requested to investigate while Gaston County Police will do an internal investigation.
"We understand the public's concern and are committed to full transparency. We will share further information as it becomes available and as the investigation progresses," a letter from the Gaston County Police Department says. "Our thoughts are with the officers involved, their families, and the families of the individuals affected by this tragic incident."
