Local residents without shelter will have a place to stay for three days as temperatures are expected to plunge well below zero in western Wisconsin.

The city of La Crosse announced Friday it will open an emergency day center at the La Crosse Public Library, 800 Main Street. Shelter hours are:

8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 198 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 208 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Jan. 21

The center will be open to any community member seeking refuge from the severe weather. Temperatures are expected to turn sharply colder Saturday, and the Monday's high temperature isn't expected to get past 0 degrees.

Access to the main library will only be permitted during library open hours, and individuals will need to enter through the main entrances.

While the day center will be separate from the main library, some library events may be cancelled while the center is activated.

During evening hours, residents without shelter can stay at La Crosse Warming Center operated by Catholic Charities at 413 South Third St. The warming center allows people to stay overnight from Nov. 1 to May 1.

Since temperatures are expected to drop below 15 degrees, the Catholic Charities Warming Center will open its overflow capacity beds.
