The Las Vegas Raiders lost yet again on Sunday, dropping their Week 14 contest to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 28-13. However, superstar rookie tight end Brock Bowers still managed to make NFL history.
Bowers had a quiet game by his standards with three catches for 49 yards in the losing effort, but those three catches helped him set the single-season record for receptions by a rookie tight end.
The previous record-holder was Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta, who recorded 86 in 2023. With his three catches on Sunday, Bowers now has 87 on the season. And, with four games left, he has a great chance to pad his record big time.
The rookie tight end receptions record might not be the only all-time mark Bowers has when the season is all said and done. He's also in striking distance for the most receiving yards by a rookie tight end in a season, and the most receptions by any rookie in a season, regardless of position.
Chicago Bears great Mike Ditka holds the receiving yards record with 1,076. Bowers is just 143 yards shy of that. The most receptions by a rookie in NFL history is held by Los Angeles Rams wide receiver, Puka Nacua, who had 105 in 2023. Bowers is just 18 receptions shy of that.
To break the receiving yards mark, Bowers needs 36 yards per game over the next four. He has tallied more yards than that in all but one game this season. For the receptions record, Bowers needs an average of 4.75 per contest.
At this point, Bowers is most certainly in the hunt for the Offensive Rookie of the Year, but the problem is that voters typically lean toward rookie quarterbacks, of which there are two really good ones this season in Bo Nix and Jayden Daniels.
However, if Bowers continues to break all-time records in what has been a historic season, perhaps he can buck the trend and become the first tight end in league history to win the award.
