WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) -- The death of a house cat from the bird flu in Oregon has prompted a recall of pet food that spans a dozen U.S. states, including Florida.
On Tuesday, Northwest Naturals announced the company would recall a batch of its Feline Turkey Recipe raw frozen pet food. The affected products are its 2-pound plastic bags with "Best if used by" dates of 5/21/26 B10 and 06/23/2026 B1.
The Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) determined the raw and frozen pet food tested positive for a H5N1 strain of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) virus. A genetic match was also found in the infected cat. State Veterinarian Dr. Ryan Scholz said the ODA is confident the cat caught the virus from the pet food.
"This cat was strictly an indoor cat; it was not exposed to the virus in its environment, and results from the genome sequencing confirmed that the virus recovered from the raw pet food and infected cat were exact matches to each other," he continued.
The ODA statement noted that no human cases linked to the recalled pet food have been reported. State and local health officials are keeping tabs on people who had contact with the cat to see if they develop symptoms.
Anyone who has bought the affected pet food is asked to throw it out immediately and contact the place where it was purchased for a refund. More information can be found by emailing Northwest Naturals of Portland at [email protected] or by calling 866-637-1872, Monday through Friday, between 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
In addition to Florida, the cat food was also sold in:
The ODA added that this recall highlights the importance of not feeding raw meat to pets or eating it yourself. In addition to the bird flu, raw meat can also contain pathogens such as Salmonella, Listeria, and E. coli. Raw milk that has not been pasteurized can also carry harmful germs.
