The Minnesota Golden Gophers closed out the first half of the season on a high note, completing a weekend sweep over the St. Thomas Tommies with a 6-2 victory on Saturday night.
The win helped Minnesota improve to 13-4-1 (9-4-1 WCHA) on the season and extended their all-time record to 18-0-0 against St. Thomas, who fell to 5-13-2 (2-11-1 WCHA) on the year.
Peyton Hemp opened the scoring for Minnesota from Nelli Laitinen at 9:30 of the first period but Rylee Bartz tied it with assists from Sadie Lindsay and Keara Parker at 11:34.
Laitinen scored a goal from Maggie Nicholson at 12:00 of the opening period to give Minnesota a 2-1 lead at the first intermission and the Gophers added a power play goal by Sydney Morrow (assists by Natalie Mlynkova and Abbey Murphy at 10:43) and Peyton Hemp (assists by Chloe Primerano and Morrow at 16:42) to extend the lead to 4-1 at the second intermission.
Murphy scored with an assist from Morrow to extend Minnesota's lead to 5-1 at 4:24 of the third period before Lindsay scored with assists from Parker and Haley Maxwell at 6:22 to help the Tommies cut the deficit to 6-2. Primerano scored the final goal of the game, getting assists from Murphy and Ella Huber at 19:58 of the third period to close the scoring.
Hannah Clark made 20 saves to earn the win for Minnesota. Dani Strom stopped 36 shots in a losing effort for St. Thomas.
The Gophers will return to action on Jan. 1 when they host Bemidji State in Lakeville.
