Texas high school football playoffs: Westlake dominates defensively to beat S.A. Brennan

Westlake is off to the Class 6A Division I regional semifinals thanks to a dominating effort on defense.

The Chaps smothered San Antonio Brennan all game, keeping it to less than 130 yards of offense, most of which came on a 75-yard halfback pass, a blocked punt that led to a short touchdown drive, and were efficient enough on offense to take a 24-7 win in an area round playoff game Friday at Burger Stadium.

Rees Wise threw for a touchdown and ran for two scores to lead the Chaps offense, which only managed barely more than 160 yards itself, took advantage of short fields on all of its scoring drives.

Brennan (10-2) reached Westlake territory only two times.

Hayes Brodhead's blocked punt set Westlake up at the Bears 1-yard line late in the first quarter, and two plays later, Wise hit Cullen Devine -- normally a defensive lineman -- for a wide-open 3-yard TD pass.

Wise's 4-yard scoring run to cap off a 58-yard drive late in the second quarter put the Chaps ahead 14-0 going into halftime. His 2-yard TD plunge in the third quarter finished off nearly an identical drive in distance that bled more than five minutes off the clock.

Noah Bartlett's 24-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter gave Westlake a 24-0 lead before Cayden Glass' 1-yard TD run after the halfback pass accounted for the Bears' score.

Westlake (11-1) will play either former district opponent Johnson or Los Fresnos in the regional semifinals.
