Wheeling, W.Va. (WTRF-TV) Canine Sheik is the newest member to join the Wheeling Police Department.
She is a Belgian Malinois coming all the way from Germany.
Canine Sheik, together with her handler Officer Brandon Stanley, spent several weeks training and getting to know each other at Merry Canine Services in Norwich, Ohio.
She learned policing commands, apprehension techniques, and various illegal drug scenarios during the training.
Officer Stanley says he is excited about becoming a canine handler.
"From day one. She came home with me, and she had a kennel set up in my basement. So, then that's when the bonding process started. And then she's been with me every day since. So, we bond in that aspect. So, it quickly becomes that I'm dad to her. Even though we met two and a half years into her life span. When I first had my interview with the chief to become a police officer, he asked me what I wanted to do, and I told him to be a canine officer. I love working with dogs and training, and now I get to do that. So, coming to work is a lot more fun and exciting for me."
Sheik will join the current canines, Jericho and Virgil, who are also trained in narcotics detection and Ozzy, who is trained in explosives detection.
With the addition of Sheik to the department, each of the four patrol shifts will now have an assigned canine officer.
Sheik is just two years old and was purchased through the city's allotment of the West Virginia opioid settlements fund.
