Letter to the editor: Why don't more schools test for radon?

Some of us will do anything to save a buck, even indirectly kill other people in the process.

We let cancer kill about 500,000 Americans each year. Allow me to break this down to any hometown.

A hometown is part of a school district, and the district is funded by tax dollars. Now, does your school district do radon testing? After all, second only to smoking and secondhand smoke, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer. Does your school district allow smoking in any of the rooms or neglect to filter out smoke, and or neglect to alarm for smoke in any of the rooms? I'm sure the answer is "no." So why does only 1 in 5 U.S. school rooms test for radon, which is odorless, colorless and tasteless and can't be filtered out from indoor air? Therefore, the other 4 out of 5 U.S. schoolrooms are not doing radon testing, presumably to save a few bucks.

Why would a school not test for the second leading cause of lung cancer, when lung cancer is the leading type of diagnosed cancer and it is not expensive to test for radon and get rid of radon in any schoolroom?
