Call it a perfect start for the Cape Tech boys basketball team.
The Crusaders topped Sturgis West, 50-37, in their home opener Monday night to improve to 2-0. The Navigators dropped to 0-2.
Cape Tech played tough defense all night and did a great job on the glass. Anthony Bartlett led all scorers with 26 points. Brian Amaru added 11.
In other high school sports action:
Tri-County 45, St. John Paul II 43: The Lions fell to 0-2 on the season. Tim Cronin scored 11 points in the loss.
Nauset 7, Triton 0: The Warriors (1-0-0) opened the season with a decisive victory. Sam Mayhew (two goals), Logan Poulin (two goals), Colin Ward (two goals), and Jake Eldredge each scored for Nauset. Jack Martin, Ward, Eldredge, Poulin, Mayhew, Logan Miller, Braxton Bassett, and Tyler Manchuk all had an assist.
Upper Cape 4, GNBVT 1: The Rams (1-1-0) won their first game of the season on the road. Sophomore Tyler Dmytryck finished with his first career hat trick that included two short handed goals. Freshman goaltender Evan Barraso stopped 33 of 34 shots for his first career Win.
Nauset 3, Pope Francis 1: Nauset/Monomoy (1-0) won to open the season Sunday. Julia Kipperman scored two goals, and Carly Brand scored another and had two assists. Sophie Eldredge also had an assist.
Sandwich 6, Norwell/Scituate 3: The Lady Knights won the Judy Gormley Holiday Classic with this win on Sunday. Khloe Schultz had a hat trick and was named the Macos Bait and Tackle MVP. Darby Rounseville had a goal and three assists. Marley Dwyer had a goal and two assists. Casey Pestilli had a goal. Harper Penna and Elisabeth Stutzman each had an assist. Bryce Sawyer had 21 saves.
Sandwich 63 Nauset 14; South Shore 42, Sandwich 36; Tri County 47, Sandwich 21; Sandwich 42, Martha's Vineyard 18
Sandwich senior captain Luke Steele, competing at 215 pounds, delivered a undefeated performance, going 4-0 with all victories coming by way of pin. Senior captain Oakley Gully also finished the day unbeaten at 4-0 in the heavyweight class, including three wins by pin. Gully earned a 48-second pin against Jack Disharoon of Tri-County, stunning last year's third-place finisher at the state championships.
Junior Liam Hallett, competing at 132 pounds, mirrored the captain's success by also going 4-0, including three pins in just 78 seconds of total mat time. Sophomore Jack Steele competed at 138 pounds, finishing with a strong 3-1 record, including a win over state qualifier Jack Peno of Nauset.
In one of the day's most thrilling matches, eighth grader Sam Guzman, at 165 pounds, secured a come-from-behind victory in overtime against Paul Harritty of Tri-County. Guzman's grit and stamina were on full display as he battled back to clinch the win.
The team also saw contributions from freshman Henry Rockwell and senior Andrew Morrison Sheppard, each earning a win by pin in their respective weight classes. Senior Captain Elias Everts added to the team's tally with a hard-fought win by pin at 190 pounds.
