$6M in Grants Available to Drive Coal Innovation in Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio Department of Development announced the availability of $6 million in grant funding to advance innovation in coal technologies, fostering economic growth, job creation and energy sustainability across the state.

The funding is available through the Ohio Coal Research and Development Program, which supports projects aimed at modernizing the use of Ohio coal through innovative technologies and processes such as rare earth element extractions for manufacturing, alternate uses for coal waste and even the conversion of coal into high-quality materials for housing construction.

"One of our greatest strengths as a state is our ability to adapt and innovate," Gov. Mike DeWine said. "Ohio's research community has proven time and again that it can drive growth in energy production and sustainability. This funding builds on their efforts and ensures that we remain leaders in coal technology."

Eligible applicants include municipal-, rural- and investor-owned utilities, nonprofit and for-profit entities operating in Ohio and educational and scientific institutions within the state. The Department of Development administers the program through its Ohio Coal Development Office.

"Ohio's coal industry has been a cornerstone of our great state since the very beginning, building our communities and providing a way of life for generations of families," said Lydia Mihalik, director of the Department of Development. "This program allows us to reimagine how we use this resource to create cleaner, more efficient technologies that support job growth, strengthen our communities and improve the lives of even more Ohioans."

Funding opportunities for this round range from $250,000 to a maximum award of $5 million, with priority given to large projects close to implementation. All projects are required to be completed within either 12 or 24 months.

Applications are open through 11:59 p.m. March 31. For more information and to apply, click HERE.
