Bird flu detected in geese at park in Scottsdale

SCOTTSDALE, AZ (AZFamily) -- Additional cases of bird flu have been confirmed in Arizona, this time in two geese at a park in Scottsdale.

The Arizona Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory recently detected avian influenza in a free-ranging domestic goose and a Canada goose that was found at a Scottsdale park and submitted for testing. Officials confirmed the geese were found at Chaparral Park, near Hayden and Chaparral roads.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department says that while strain identification is pending, it's likely the same Eurasian strain of the virus detected in other cases around the state and continent.

"Generally, wild birds are resistant to high path AI [avian influenza]. However, the Eurasian H5N1 strain currently circulating in North America is different and has caused the death of a large number of wild birds, Arizona Game and Fish said in a news release. "Bald eagles, great horned owls, Canada geese, snow geese, waterfowl, and raptors have been among the species affected."

To report cases of sick wild birds, call (623) 236-7201. For sick domestic birds. contact the Arizona Department of Agriculture at (602) 542-4294.

Other cases of bird flu have been reported in the Valley. Earlier this month, the Maricopa County Department of Public Health announced that five animals at Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium and Safari Park in Litchfield Park died after testing positive for H5N1.
