Local homeschoolers spread holiday cheer

ASHBY -- This holiday season, a remarkable group of homeschool students who meet at the Ashby Free Public Library have set out to bring joy and warmth to the residents of Wachusett Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center.

Motivated by a desire to ensure that every resident receives a gift this year, the students, ranging from preschoolers to high schoolers, have come together -- along with the community - to make the holidays brighter for those who might otherwise be forgotten.

"The resident's wishes were simple, yet deeply meaningful," said Heather Brodie Perry, Ashby Free Public Library Director. "They wished for nightgowns, slippers, fuzzy blankets, body pillows and more - all the comforts of home - that many of us take for granted. These heartfelt requests reflect the resident's desire for warmth and companionship, and this thoughtful group of students are determined to make those wishes would come true."

Many of the students involved are neurodiverse, which has only deepened their empathy and compassion for others.

"Their involvement has been inspiring to all who have witnessed their generosity," Perry said.

The Ashby Free Public Library, alongside the Friends of the Library, and Hannaford's Supermarket, have stepped up to support the initiative.

Hannaford's has generously donated food and toiletries to the cause, while the library took on the task of collecting other requested items.

In addition, a special Target gift registry has been set up for those who wish to contribute directly. The wish list includes essential items the residents have requested, allowing anyone in the community to easily purchase gifts that will directly benefit these seniors.

"Seeing these children, from the youngest preschoolers to the high schoolers, come together with such a sense of purpose and compassion is truly inspiring," said Perry. "Their efforts show how deeply they care for others and how much they understand the importance of giving back."

The community is encouraged to participate in this heartwarming initiative by either purchasing gifts from the Target Gift Registry or by making monetary donations through the Ashby Free Public Library.

"Every donation, big or small, will help bring comfort and joy to the residents at Wachusett Nursing Home, ensuring that no one is left without a gift this holiday season," said Perry. "Let's come together as a community to share the love and make this holiday season brighter for those who need it most."
