Patriots OC Alex Van Pelt shares reaction to Jerod Mayo seemingly throwing him under the bus

After the New England Patriots' 30-17 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday at State Farm Stadium, Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo gave a confusing answer regarding the team's decision to have rookie quarterback Drake Maye run the ball.

"You said it. I didn't," Mayo said. Most people took that as questioning offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, who Mayo has described as the head coach of the offense.

While the head coach attempted to walk back the comment on Sunday and Monday, the story has continued to live on, and on Thursday, Van Pelt spoke to the media for the first time since and addressed the situation.

"I didn't see it," Van Pelt said. "I had no idea. Then, I was watching tape early in the morning, and he came in and said what he had said. I have Jerod's back at all costs. We have a great relationship. We're very communicative. I took no offense to that whatsoever. I think it was taken out of context, as he said. And we have a great relationship."

Van Pelt has every right in the world to be upset with Mayo, but he's a professional, and even if he was, he wouldn't say it in a press conference.

It also wouldn't be surprising if these are Van Pelt's true feelings on the situation. Mayo gave him an opportunity to call an offense for just the second time in his career and has spoken highly of him all season.
