Gladewater issues boil water notice for some residents

GLADEWATER - Some Gladewater residents will need to boil their water following a water line break Monday.

City officials sent a boil water notice to residents Tuesday morning, saying those who lost water pressure Monday should boil their water before consuming it. The notice was required by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality because some residents lost water pressure Monday.

Crews were working on a damaged 16-inch water main on west Lake Drive Monday. The issue "required immediate attention due to the size of the line and the extent of water flow it transported," according to a news release.

Residents who did not lose water pressure do not need to boil their water, according to city officials.

Boiling water kills potentially harmful bacteria and other microbes. It should be brought to a "rigorous rolling boil" and boiled for two minutes.

City officials will notify residents when the boil water notice is no longer in effect. They expect to do so around noon Wednesday.

Smith said city workers continue to replace old water lines, but the process is time-consuming and expensive.

"In dealing with infrastructure that is 50-plus years old, these repairs will continue, and we hope to reduce the number of citizens affected as we locate undocumented valves throughout the city," Smith said in a Facebook post.
