FOREST ACRES -- A longtime staple of the local fast food and ice cream scene is closing.
Zesto will close sometime "right after Christmas and before the New Year," the City of Forest Acres said in a Facebook post Dec. 16.
The closure comes as the owner has decided to retire, the city said. An official last day for the restaurant, which sits at the corner of Forest Drive and Harrison Road, has yet to be decided.
"We are sad to share the rumors are true," the post read. "The sun will soon set on Zesto's on Forest Drive later this month. From the food, to the ice cream treats to maybe even your first job as a kid... Zesto's in Forest Acres has always been like an old friend to welcome you home."
The Forest Acres restaurant originally opened as part of the Zesto chain of burger, chicken and ice cream joints across the Midlands, before splitting off into its own establishment.
Another Zesto in Chapin closed in May. Surviving restaurants from the former chain include the locations in West Columbia and along Columbia's North Main Street.
"When thinking about what's for lunch or dinner this week, you may want to go by for one last time," the city's announcement read.
Hundreds of commenters on social media lamented the store's closure.
"To say that I am sad is an understatement!" one user commented. "My great-grandparent's home was where Lizard's Thicket is. Mom recalls walking down to get a 'nickel cone.' Thank you, Zesto, for all of the fried chicken and cheeseburgers for our family as well as countless cups of chocolate with sprinkles because it will always be my favorite."
At least one manager of the location plans to open a food truck, Forest Acres city officials said.
